Mozilla’s Seabird phone concept!

Sometimes, a concept device really makes you sit back and think to yourself, “is this possible?” Surely I’m not the only one that is thinking the same thing about the Seabird conceptdevice from Mozilla Labs, which would truly push the boundaries of a mobile device if a physical unit ever sees the light of day.

The most interesting thing about thisconcept, and ultimately the least plausible, is the dual Pico projectors, which can simulate a physical QWERTY keyboard that can be interacted with by the user, as well as project the phone’s display in a much larger format.

Kind of like a swiss army knife, this concept device also houses a wireless pointer, as well as a pop-out Bluetooth headset. While both of these sound cool, in reality they just don’t seem very practical.

Overview

The Mozilla Seabird, part of the Mozilla Labs’ Concept Series, is an experiment in how users might interact with their mobile content as devices and technology advances. Drawing on insights culled from the Mozilla community through the project’s blog, a focus quickly developed around frustrating physical interactions. While mobile CPUs, connectivity and development platforms begin approaching that of desktops, the lagging ability to efficiently input information has grown ever more pronounced.

Pico Projector

With mobile phone companies such as Samsung, LG and Motorola moving towards display applications for projectors, the technology remains open for expanding user interaction and input at the same time. The Seabird, on just a flat surface, enables netbook-quality interaction by working with the projector’s angular distortion to deliver interface, rather than content. With the benefit of a dock, each projector works independently and delivers laptop levels of efficiency.

Interaction

The Seabird, then, introduces a few possibilities into how user interaction might evolve with the advancing motion capture and projector driven innovation in the market. First out, the Seabird imagines how a multiple use dongle might augment the crowded gestural interface with greater precision and direct manipulation of content in 3D space.

Design

The form development took its cues from various aerodynamic, avian and decidedly feminine forms. Its erect posture intends a sense of poise while its supine conformity to the hand reconciles that with the user’s desire for digital control. The curvature of the back also serves a functional role in elevating the projector lens elements when lying flat.

BA Smartphone Concept

Maleville Sébastien recently detailed the BA Smartphone concept, a pretty innovative idea that can be seen in the images below. This is a rotating phone with a physical keyboard and touch display. The BA name comes from the number eight in Chinese, that is the symbol of full versatility , both horizontally and vertically.

The handset is made of aluminum and its structure is divided into two equal parts. The top part includes a touchscreen display, while the bottom part includes a physical keyboard with pretty big and comfy keys. They’ll come in handy for elderly users and folks who want to avoid mistyping.

If you flip the keyboard on the other side, you can access a wide touch area, allowing you to take full advantage of the full touch applications and very cool games. There’s a camera button on the frame of the phone, so you can hold the device like a traditional camera and take pics.

Concept future innovation – Google Magnify

Google Magnify is the latest conceptto be created by Anh Nguyen. Thisconcept began with a funny email that he had been going around the office at his work. He went up to their intern, who just happened to be from France, before realizing that he would have a tough time reading it. After a little bit of confusion, the intern just copy and pasted the entire email into Google Translate and was cracking up just like everyone else after reading it.

Concept future technology Google Magnify 4

Then the idea started to percolate in his mind; what if there was a device which was basically a window to the world, where everything would be translated into the language of your choosing? A modern take on the magnifying glass, which hasn’t been updated much in its 800 years of existence. With a flip out handle, triple cameras, and text recognition software running through the Google Translate engine, the device just needs to be held in front of any text to be translated on the spot.

Just think how helpful this would be for tourists, students abroad, even our parents; the world wouldn’t seem like such a scary place with help from Google Magnify.

Future LED Chess

Chess isn’t perhaps everyone’s favourite game and it doesn’t have to be either. What with all the pawns, the rules and the “intellectual” sounding players who go on about all the moves and strategies like it were the World War III! Well, if you are a chess lover, here is a geeky version of the immaculately boring chess board and this one comes with LED lights.

The WU& a Chess Set or the LED Chess Set by Guan Yi Quan is not only funny to look at but it actually looks good. Even if you hate chess as much as I do, you could get one of these to put your chess loving friends down, and show them how downmarket they really
are with their old-fashioned chess board. Apart from that I really don’t know what is so great about this design.

Oh yeah, if you don’t like losing to your human-partners, you could ask the computer to play against you. I would say, go ahead and get a 6-pack beer and get a guy with you and get busy! There is no point in wasting time over board games when you have a hottie with surfboard abs next to you!

Exoskeleton the farmers

RoboCop and Iron Man can dodge bullets and crush villains, a new powered suit from Japan promises its elderly users more modest powers, such as pulling up radishes without getting a backache.

Unlike its heavily armed Hollywood counterparts, the Power Assist Suit aims to make life easier for Japan’s army of greying farmers.

The metal-and-plastic exoskeleton boasts eight electric motors that amplify the strength of the wearer’s arms and legs, as well as sensors that can detect movements and respond to commands through a voice-
recognition system.

RoboCop-power-assist-2

Prof. Shigeki Toyama and his team developed the power-enhancing suit at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and Toyama plans to set up a company to start producing the futuristic outfit by the end of the year.

“If the farmer bends over to grasp a radish, his back will be firmly supported,” said Gohei Yamamoto, a student working on the team.

“A brief vocal instruction will instantly straighten the rods along his legs, giving him the power he needs to pull the vegetable without effort.”

Fifteen years in the making, the robo-suit can reduce the user’s physical effort by 62 per cent on average.

Vertical parking system

Take your car to play in the parking lot. Meanwhile it can go power supplied and you can go greener. All this works using only solar energy. Parking vertically is the best way to increase the number of vacancies in a parking lot. The relationship is 3 cars to 1. This means that where formerly 1 car parked horizontally, now permit 3 cars vertically. Just be careful not to leave your things loose inside. The rear of the engine is covered with photovoltaic panels which give total autonomy of operation and enough power to supply electric cars.In this area there is also a space for advertisement.

The Page E-Reader

One of the major benefits of having gadgets is that it constantly connects us to the world and what’s happening in it. Though these technological devices have allowed us to interact with data from anywhere we choose, there isn’t a unique delivery system for the information they’re delivering especially when “news” is concerned. The printed versions of newspapers can offer mobility, much like a device, but access to content can be cumbersome in certain reading situations. How do we combine the affordances of print and online versions of news and translate that hybrid into a single device? A medium that conforms to human practices and the varied scenarios of accessing news.

Page-E-Reader-1

THEME – A device that truly considers the daily scenarios of our audience as they engage with news content. ATTITUDE – Familiar, Classic, Adaptive. CONCEPT – The first question we ask is, “what if there was a device that inherited all the affordances of print, and screen based news formats.” Our goal is to design a flexible grid system that attacks this question. The user is presented information in an aesthetic which is much more inline with print but then can navigate through the content to access different sections and objects of the paper which is a behavior accustom to online practices. The second question we ask is, “what if the device is adaptive to the activity or environment of the user while he or she is immersed with the content?” The strategy we have set forth is to allow the form of the device to be physically manipulated using the practice of folding to harmonize with the situation in which the user is engaged. RESEARCH – We research about current newspaper’s affordance & screen base news formats device like Kindle. Kindle has affordance of portability, archiving , available to connect anywhere. But the look and feel of kindle device is unfamiliar compare to the original, physical book. and the experience of kindle lacks the emotional connection and traditional reading behavior. Also, we look at several different newspapers and found the similarities and common characteristic in the grid system of the design. We like to use the grid system into our design landscape. From that, we try to adopt the newspaper grid systems to our own device and also, screen based device’s durability and interactivity.
